Huawei and LANIT Group Collaborate to Advance Russia's Telecommunications Industry

2020-12-03

In its latest announcement, Huawei declared a significant partnership with LANIT Group—a multidisciplinary, integrated Russian IT company (Laboratory of Advanced Information Technologies)—to jointly advance the development of Russia’s telecommunications industry. Going forward, LANIT Group will localize Huawei’s products and solutions in accordance with Russian regulatory requirements and introduce Huawei’s independently developed products into the Russian market, delivering customized solutions tailored specifically for Russian customers.

Notably, while Russia has proactively extended an olive branch for cooperation, Huawei also regards Russia as a critical overseas pillar—especially amid intensifying U.S. restrictions. In late August this year, Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei stated during a public speech at Shanghai Jiao Tong University that Huawei would redirect funds originally earmarked for investment in the United States toward Russia. Huawei has pledged to raise salaries for Russian scientists and aims to cultivate 10,000 experts in Russia within five years (by 2025). In February this year, Huawei announced plans to develop its HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) ecosystem locally in Russia to support more developers, with initial investments exceeding USD 10 million (approximately RMB 66.95 million). Additionally, Huawei is likely to establish further equipment manufacturing bases in Russia. For instance, in early October, Russia’s state-owned telecommunications enterprise RTI Group secured a major contract from Huawei to produce Kunpeng processors. Under this agreement, Huawei will manufacture ARM-architecture servers based on its Kunpeng processors locally in Russia.
