2019-11-13

Brasília, Nov. 13 (Xinhua News Agency) — During the 11th BRICS Summit, the BRICS Humanistic Exchange Forum and the global premiere of the first jointly produced BRICS documentary, 'Children and Glory,' were successfully held in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. This event, an important ancillary activity of the BRICS Summit, was co-organized by China’s State Council Information Office and China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, together with Brazilian partners.

Officials from China’s State Council Information Office, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, and National Cultural Heritage Administration attended the forum alongside Bruno Araújo, Chairman of Brazil’s Social Democratic Party; Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (Chairman of the Brazil-China Parliamentary Friendship Group and the BRICS Parliamentary Friendship Group); Federal Deputy Eduardo Cury; Lana, Vice-Chairperson of the Brazil-China Football Exchange Center; directors of the jointly produced BRICS documentary; and over 200 other guests—including think tank representatives from all five BRICS countries. Under the theme 'Strengthening Humanistic Ties to Consolidate the Third Pillar of BRICS Cooperation,' participants engaged in candid, in-depth dialogue and intellectual exchange on three subtopics: 'Documentary Filmmaking and BRICS Stories,' 'Humanistic Exchange and People-to-People Connectivity among BRICS Countries,' and 'Civilizational Dialogue, Mutual Learning, and BRICS Partnership'—achieving the anticipated outcomes.

As the initiator of this event, China used the forum to comprehensively present President Xi Jinping’s important ideas on enhancing exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations. It emphasized that humanistic exchange among BRICS countries holds immense potential and represents a long-term investment worthy of sustained commitment—one that will keep BRICS cooperation vibrant and dynamic. On building the third pillar of BRICS cooperation and advancing mutual learning and inspiration among BRICS nations, China proposed three initiatives: First, organize more humanistic exchange activities to showcase to the world the enduring beauty of BRICS civilizations—beauty that neither fades nor loses its luster; second, learn from each other’s innovative civilizational achievements, applying BRICS wisdom to tackle development challenges; and third, deepen dialogue, exchange, and pragmatic cooperation across all fields, transforming BRICS countries into a community of shared future bound by common interests and mutual support.

In his opening address, Araújo stated that President Xi Jinping is a strong advocate for BRICS humanistic exchange, and China’s persistent efforts have led to rich outcomes in BRICS humanistic cooperation. He underscored that humanistic exchange forms the bedrock of BRICS cooperation—and resonates deeply with peoples across BRICS nations and worldwide. With unparalleled advantages in culture, science and technology, and education, the five BRICS countries possess vast space and bright prospects for further humanistic collaboration. In his keynote speech, Senator Pacheco noted that the remarkable success of socialism with Chinese characteristics has drawn high attention and sincere admiration from Brazil and countries around the world. He added that China-initiated BRICS humanistic exchange has already transcended the five BRICS nations, becoming a vital catalyst for civilizational dialogue and cooperation across multiple continents. The Brazilian government will further advance richer outcomes in China-Brazil cooperation within the BRICS framework. Other BRICS representatives—including Srikanth Kondapalli, Director of the Centre for East Asian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (India), and Dabata, Researcher at South Africa’s Human Sciences Research Council—also offered insightful views and recommendations on strengthening BRICS humanistic exchange and supporting BRICS cooperation.

Participants unanimously expressed that this BRICS Humanistic Exchange Forum and the jointly produced and broadcast documentary represent an innovative endeavor in BRICS humanistic exchange, playing a positive role in deepening mutual understanding and friendship among BRICS peoples and promoting civilizational convergence and mutual learning. There is broad anticipation that, closely following the momentum of the BRICS Summit, the forum and the joint documentary project will evolve into a leading institutional mechanism for BRICS humanistic exchange—jointly reinforcing the third pillar of BRICS cooperation.

Prior to the forum’s opening, prominent delegates from all five BRICS countries jointly launched the global premiere of the first jointly produced BRICS documentary, 'Children and Glory.' Directed overall by Chinese filmmaker Lu Chuan, the documentary centers on 'Football (Cricket) Youth in the Five BRICS Nations Pursuing Their Dreams.' Comprising one episode per country—each 52 minutes long—the series was co-created over two years by renowned directors from all five BRICS nations. It has already begun simultaneous broadcast across the five countries and will later be adapted into a feature-length documentary film for global distribution. Concurrently, the event featured a photo exhibition themed on the jointly produced documentary and a cultural exhibition titled 'The Wisdom of Confucius.'
