2020-01-04

The 'Third Annual Meeting of the Chinese Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation and the Second Wanshou International Situation Seminar', hosted by the Chinese Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation (hereinafter referred to as the 'Chinese Council') and organized by Beijing International Studies University, opened in Beijing on the 3rd.

Guo Yezhou, Deputy Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chairperson of the Chinese Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation, stated in his speech that serving BRICS cooperation—particularly by providing intellectual support that is both ideologically insightful and policy-relevant—is the core responsibility and value proposition of the Chinese Council.

In his address, Guo Yezhou expressed four expectations for council member institutions: upholding capacity building, maintaining a problem-oriented approach, promoting exchange and integration, and skillfully amplifying their voices. He also affirmed that the Chinese Council will continue offering platforms and resource support to all member institutions.

Huang Yiyang, Deputy Coordinator for BRICS Affairs of China and Deputy Director of the Department of International Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, remarked in her speech that, under current circumstances, the BRICS cooperation mechanism has evolved into one of the most important international multilateral cooperation frameworks. With Russia assuming the BRICS rotating presidency this year, it will play a vital role in deepening BRICS’ 'three-pronged development model', safeguarding multilateralism, and upholding an open world economy.

The meeting was moderated by Luan Jianzhang, Director of the Research Office of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Secretary-General of the Chinese Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation. Themed 'The Path to Revival Amidst a Century-Old Transformation', the event brought together over 200 participants—including representatives from nearly 100 domestic universities, research institutes, and enterprises (all council member institutions) and more than 70 experts and scholars—who engaged in discussions on three key topics: 'The Century-Old Transformation and China-U.S. Relations', 'Global Governance and New South-South Cooperation', and 'The New Industrial Revolution and Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind'.

At this annual meeting, the number of member institutions of the Chinese Council reached 100. The meeting also launched the Blue Book on New South-South Cooperation—BRICS Cooperation Development Report (2019) and the BRICS Sustainable Development Report 2018, and unveiled the official website of the Chinese Council.
