Tianqi-6 Satellite Successfully Launched; China’s IoT Constellation Now Comprises Eight Operational Satellites

On the evening of October 26, the Tianqi-6 Internet of Things (IoT) satellite was successfully launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China aboard a Long March-2C carrier rocket. The satellite has since entered its on-orbit platform and payload testing phase and is expected to begin providing global data communication services within two weeks. Tianqi-6 is a key component of the Tianqi Constellation—the first operational low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite IoT constellation in China and a vital new infrastructure for the IoT sector. With the integration of Tianqi-6, the Tianqi Constellation will have eight operational satellites in orbit, collectively supporting global IoT data services.

(I) Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Holds Collective Study Session on Quantum Technology

On the afternoon of October 16, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held its 24th collective study session, focusing on the research and application prospects of quantum technology. General Secretary Xi Jinping, presiding over the session, noted that quantum technology has advanced rapidly in recent years, emerging as a frontier domain in the new round of scientific revolution and industrial transformation. Accelerating the development of quantum technology plays an extremely important role in promoting high-quality development and safeguarding national security. This collective study was arranged to better understand the global trends in quantum technology development, analyze China’s current status in this field, and further advance China’s quantum technology initiatives. President Xi emphasized that the world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, with scientific and technological innovation representing one of the pivotal variables. To seize opportunities amid crises and open new paths amid transformations, we must rely on scientific and technological innovation for answers. We must fully recognize the importance and urgency of advancing quantum technology, strengthen strategic planning and systematic deployment, grasp major trends, and take the initiative early.

(II) MIIT Releases Economic Operation Report for China’s Telecommunications Industry in the First Three Quarters of 2020

The third quarter of 2020 has concluded. As the nationwide epidemic situation stabilizes, the telecommunications industry—boosted by the dividends of 5G development—is returning to a high-speed growth trajectory. On October 23, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) officially released the Economic Operation Report for China’s Telecommunications Industry in the First Three Quarters of 2020, compiled by the Department of Operation Monitoring and Coordination. According to the report, total revenue from telecom services across China reached RMB 102.28 billion in the first three quarters of 2020, representing a 3.2% year-on-year increase—consistent with the growth rate recorded in the first half of the year. However, with the gradual rollout of 5G networks, data and internet services are increasingly becoming the fundamental growth drivers of China’s telecom industry.
