According to Sensor Tower’s global non-gaming app download rankings for October 2020, TikTok led by a wide margin. Data shows TikTok achieved 66 million installs—ranking first—surpassing WhatsApp, the second-place app, by 9 million installs. This figure represents a 9.5-percentage-point increase compared to October 2019. Notably, TikTok’s total downloads included 12% from China’s Douyin and 10% from Brazil.
As early as September, TikTok internally decided to prioritize the Brazilian market in October, aiming to enhance product performance and achieve breakthrough growth. Brazil’s market growth trajectory was also included in Zhang Yiming’s OKRs. In October, Brazil’s classification in TikTok’s international market SAB tier system was upgraded—from Level B to Level A—prompting corresponding adjustments to TikTok’s Brazil country operations team. Following the merger of ByteDance’s overseas products Vigo and TikTok, Vigo’s former head of Brazil operations assumed the role of TikTok’s Country Operations Lead for Brazil.
