Liu Yunjie: All-Sensory Communication Is Imminent

2020-12-03

At the World Internet Conference–Internet Development Forum, Academician Liu Yunjie of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of Jiangsu Future Networks Innovation Institute stated, 'The internet is currently undergoing a major transformation—its transmission speed will evolve from an 'ordinary road' to a 'highway,' and even to 'high-speed rail' or 'aviation.' Our moderately prosperous society will thus embrace new experiences such as virtual face-to-face meetings and remote surgery.' Liu Yunjie noted that all-sensory communication will be a groundbreaking future technology: with bandwidth reaching 1.9 TB and latency reduced to approximately 1–5 milliseconds—combined with advanced sensing technologies—the concept of a 'cloud hug' could become reality.

Liu Yunjie believes today’s internet is transitioning from the 'first half'—focused on consumer applications—to the 'second half,' centered on real-world industries. Emerging application domains include industrial internet, energy internet, and connected vehicles—each presenting both challenges and opportunities. '5G represents a milestone in telecommunications, yet its full potential cannot be realized without a robust core network. Traditional network architectures struggle to support differentiated services, deterministic bandwidth, and ultra-low latency requirements. Therefore, next-generation networks—including 6G—hold tremendous promise.' In his envisioned future scenario, all-sensory communication—integrating vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell—will deliver an experience indistinguishable from physical presence. 'Advancing this field requires concerted efforts from high-tech enterprises and research institutions worldwide, fostering deep integration between the digital economy and the real economy—and through the extension of the digital economy, propelling automation, networking, and intelligence across society and the economy to a new level.'
